Geeta Dutt

Born Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri, this playback singer is one talent that needs no introduction. Better known as Geeta Dutt, she ruled the hip hop playback scene before Asha took over. She could belt out songs of any genre, esp. those with a western edge and make them sound absolutely effortless. This was the time when Lata was ruling the roost (that was only the beginning). Geeta Dutt was competition. She started of with bhajans and went on to sing some of the most peppy, hip hop songs of the time. Some of her best songs are those that she sang under O.P. Nayyar and S.D. Burman. And also the songs that she sang in Guru Dutt’s movies. She met Guru Dutt, an upcoming director at that time, promptly fell in love with him and married him in despite family opposition, on 26th May’ 1953. They had three children – Tarun, Arun and Nina. Unfortunately, the marriage started to show cracks by the late 50’s. Her personal life affected her singing career. She started singing less frequently. She turned to alcohol. When Guru Dutt died in 1964, Geeta was shattered. She had a nervous breakdown. Of her comeback, Anubhav (1971) – composed by her brother Kanu Roy, was among the most memorable. This was also her last movie. Geeta Dutt died of cirrhosisof the liver in 1972 at the age of 41.

Mujhse Dosti Karoge

Mujhse Dosti Karoge didn’t really jingle at the box office, but I LOVED IT! This really was Hrithiks movie, even if all the reviews state that Rani ruled. The dialogues are really good, I don’t even mind the reference to gobhi ke parate (which happens a bit too often). I actually liked this movie more than Kunal Kohli’s next, Hum Tum, which was a block buster hit. You see streaks of grey in Hrithiks character in the second half of the movie.
The movie is about three friend – Raj (Hrithik Roshan), Tina (Kareena Kapoor) and Pooja (Rani Mukeerji). The movie opens with Raj leaving for London along with his parents. He’s got a crush on Tina and sends her emails on Pooja’s computer. (This can be highly argued ‘cause u can send mail from any system. Raj never realized that Tina didn’t have a mail id?). Tina conveniently ignores his messages, but Pooja stays in contact – in Tina’s name! slowly but surely (obviously), Raj and Pooja fall in love with each other. Then one day Raj sends Pooja an email saying that he’s coming to India! Not knowing what to do, Pooja goes to Tina for help. Tina agrees to pretend having sent Raj all the emails. She is oblivious to the love that has bloomed between her two friends. In spite of this Pooja hopes that Raj would realize that it was she who had sent him all those emails. She is shattered when Raj walks straight up to Tina, instead of herself.
Raj proclaims his love to Tina, who tries to play hard to get. He gets confused as he realizes that she seems like a totally different person compared to her mails. He is attracted to Pooja too, but thinks it is friendship. The scene where Raj and Pooja dance to Raj Kapoor’Pyaar hua ikraar hua… is really romantic. Suddenly both become uncomfortable for just that split second. Oh! Beautifully done.Soon Raj has to return to London for a couple of weeks. Pooja too lands up in London cause of some course that she is doing. Can love be far behind? But now Tina too begins to love Raj. To make matters worse, just when Raj and Pooja return to inform every one of their love, Tina’s dad expires. Now Pooja feels Tina and the rest of the family just cannot handle the news of her marrying Raj. So, she asks Raj to marry Tina instead. Raj is furious, but is unable to convince Pooja to change her mind. He therefore agrees to what she says, but on the condition that Pooja too marry some one before he gets married, or else he would leave Tina at the mantap itself.
Soon the whole family goes to London for the wedding. Here, enters the charming Rohan (Uday Chopra), Raj’s friend. He very promptly falls for Pooja. She tries avoiding him but eventually becomes his friend. Here, you get to see how jealous Raj becomes, enacted beautifully by Hrithik. Afraid that Raj would carry out his threat of leaving Tina, Pooja agrees to marry Rohan. The story ends with Tina finding out about how much her two friends have sacrificed their love for her happiness, and with Pooja and Raj’s marriage. All remain friends in the end.

Ever since I saw this movie, I wanted to see Hrithik in a negative role – something like a serial killer or such. He did do Dhoom2, but he was not really BAD. He’s capable of doing such roles. I’m sure he’ll be very convincing.

(the life of the protagonists -the man and his wife- is like the dew drop on the chrysanthamum flower
to live like friends you dont need garlands or the marriage orchestra
without any kin, love and affection, what kind of a life is it?)

Mandram vandh…

[hey if anyone knows the meaning please let me know]

The perfect song for the perfect story. Mani Rathnam’s first tamil movie was a block buster hit. A classic that’s always gonna remain fresh no matter how many times u watch it. Trust me ‘cause I’ve already seen the movie about 20 times! This movie had ‘Mani Rathnam’ stamped all over it. Words cannot describe this masterpiece. If u haven’t watched it (in the original version), then what are you waiting for??? Move it! Go get the CD now!!! I’ll just give you the outline of the script.
Divya (Revathi) is literally forced into an arranged marriage with Chandra Kumar (Kokila Mohan), in spite of all her efforts to chase him away. Her past haunts her – a love that she’s unable to forget –Manohar (Karthik), who dies in a police encounter. Even when Kumar is willing to start life fresh, Divya refuses to let go of her memories, and asks for a divorce within a week of their marriage!!! As per government rules a divorce can be granted only after a year, so the two are forced to stay together like acquaintances in the same house! This song comes just after they file for divorce and are coming back home to find a surprise party arranged in celebration of their wedding.
Slowly Divya begins to fall in love with Kumar, but Kumar is not so sure about her feelings for him.
All the songs are interwoven into the story beautifully. Karthik as Manohar plays one of the best supporting characters ever. By the end of the movie you are not sure whom you’d rather love – Kumar or Manohar. But to me Kumar was like the puurrfect husband any girl can get, before I got married. He’s so patient and understanding, not worried about his wife’s past, etc, etc..
Each and every scene is there for a reason. There is nothing about the movie that you can possibly not like – including the friendly Punjabi neighbour who wants to learn Tamil.
Watch out for the last scene where Divya declares her love for Kumar.
Cinematically brilliant, this picture is a must for people who love/believe in good, clean entertainment.

Awards - Mani Rathnam won the Silver Lotus Award - Best Regional Film (Tamil)

Pehla nasha…

Song: Pehla nasha…
Movie: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992)
Singers: Udit Narayan & Sadhana
Music: Jatin-Lalit
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Picturised on: Amir Khan & Ayesha Jhulka

Chahe tum kuch na kaho, maine sunliya
Ke saathi pyaar ka mujhe chun liya
Chun liya, maine sun liya

Pehla nasha, pehla khumaar
Naya pyaar hai naya intezaar
Karlu main kya apna haal aye dil-e-bekaraar
Mere dil-e-bekaraar tu hi batha
Pehla nasha, pehla khumaar

Udtha hi phiru in hawao me kahi
Ya main jhool jau in ghatao me kahi
Ek kardo aasma aur zameen
Kaho yaaro kya karu kya nahi
Pehla nasha pehla khumaar

Usne baat ki kuch ayesi dhang se
Sapne de gaya who hazaaro rang ke
Rehjau jaise main haar ke
Aur choome who mujhe pyar se
Pehla nasha…

This song comes in the top ten most romantic hindi songs ever. Its so beautifully simple. It sort of makes me float in the air every time I listen to this song. Funny may be but true. Sadhna sounds sooo good. I still feel she hasn’t gotten her due in the industry. This movie catapulted many into the limelight – Farah Khan, Jatin-Lalit, Ayesha, Udit Narayan and others. This movie was also important to Amir Khan as it was his next big hit after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. It proved he wasn’t just a flash in the pan. I esp. loved Ayesha’s character ‘cause it was so real in the real sense. This is truly her best picture and I cant really think of anyone else doing it. Farah ended up doing the choreography when Saroj Khan, whom she was working under, walked off the sets. The song was a kind of landmark in several aspects. The whole song was picturised in slow motion, which worked just great. Pooja Bedi does a Marilyn Monroe in the song. Who can forget her red dress flying up on top of the car? It seems she really couldn’t dance so Farah fed up is said to have quoted –lets make the dress dance!

# In the movie Parineeta, Saif Ali Khan travels in the same train that Sharmila is sitting in, in the song Kasto mazza...

Aradhana

Am missing my dad a little too much today. We don't even live so close as to visit them when ever i want to. Why do girls have to do all the sacrifices? I remember a conversation I had with my husband before our marriage. He said you don’t have to worry, my people are real sweet, you’ll not have any problems, etc. (so sweet!). I told him then and there that it takes time to get adjusted. To his question regarding why, I said that its not easy to suddenly give up every thing and be happy with new people, new customs, etc. How can i be happy in a place which does not include MY family? Of course i finally did settle down. And luckily I have great in-laws and a loving husband. But, its just not possible to not remember my past (i say past 'cause now even if my parents are involved, its not completely). Dad is a real special person. This whole blog is not enough to explain about him. Well there is mom n my brother too, but today its dad who is constantly interupting my thoughts. So im dedicating this post to him.
Dad is a HUGE fan of Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar. I remember when I watched this movie, he was able to recite almost all tthe dialogues. Happens with a lot of people, including me! Anyway, this is to dad...

Song: Roop tera mastana...
Movie: Aradhana (1969)
Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music: S.D. Burman (but when he had to be hopitalised due to ill health his son, R.D.Burman took over)
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

Roop tera mastana, pyaar mera deewana
Bhool koi humse naa ho jaye
roop tera...

Raat nasheeli mast sama hai, aaj nashe me sara jaha hai -2
Haa ye sharabi mousam behkaye
Roop tera...

Ankho se ankhe milti hai ayese, bechain hoke toofa main jaise
Mouj koi sahil se takraye
Roop tera...

Rok raha hai hum ko zamana, door hi rehna paas naa aana
Kaise magar koi dil ko samjhaye
Roop tera...

Rajesh Khanna became a sensation after this movie. He was India's first superstar. He had a HUGE female fan following as the nation had never seen before.
Did u know initially this song was to be sung with a very classical base. But Kishore Kumar convinced the stubbon S.D. Burman that the song needed a little more energy to cater to the new generation.
This was Farida Jalal's debut movie. Rajesh Khanna had actually wanted his then girl friend Anju Mahendru to portray the same role. He infact went on commenting on Farida being plump, etc. But Shakthi Samatha felt Farida was better. Thank god 'cause Farida was puurfect for the role. She's so cute and adorable... and she still is the same.
Sharmila Tagore was initially very apprehensive to do the role that she finally immortalised. The role of Vandana required Sharmila to portray an old woman in the second half of the story. That was a period when she was at her peak. Only after a mock shooting, was Shakti Samatha able to convince Sharmila to do the movie.
Mohamad Rafi was initially supposed to sing all the songs, but when S.D.Burman fell sick and R.D.Burman took over, Kishore Kumar took his place. The musician and the singer never looked back again. They made a great combination.
AWARDS:
Filmfare – Best Movie – Shakti Samanta
Filmfare – Best Actress – Sharmila Tagore
Filmfare – best male playback singer – Kishore Kumar (for Roop tera mastana…)

Kal ho na ho...

This song is to me a perfect exanmple of how the story can be told in a song. I really like this song more so because of the way its been executed. If u observe, the first para is how the situation really is in the movie (Preity and Saif falling in love) and the second para is how the protagonist (Shah Rukh) wants it to be (with himself in Saif's shoes). He knows what he desires can happen but convinces himself that he should'nt reveal his undying love for Naina (Preity Zinta) - that shes better off with Saif Ali Khan. I love the part where he says ' ...par soch lo....' and 'us haath ko ....'. The second part is esp. for those who take the love they have for granted.

Song: Har ghadi...
Movie: Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)
Singer: Sonu Nigam
Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Picturised on: Shah Rukh Khan

Har ghadi badal rahi hai roop zindagi
Chao hai kabhi, kabhi hai dhoop zindagi
har pal yaha jee bhar jiyo
jo hai sama kal ho na ho
har ghadi...

Chahe jo tumhe poore dil se
Milta hai woh mushkil se
Ayesa jo koi kahi hai
Bus wohi sab se hasi hai
Us haath ko tum thaam lo
Woh mehrbaan kal ho na ho
har ghadi...

Palko pe leke saye
Paas koi jo aaye
Laakh sambhalo pagal dil ko
Dil dhadke hi jaye
Par sochlo is pal hai jo
Woh daastaa kal ho na ho.
Har ghadi...

Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)

This is a very special movie cause this was the first time that i'd gone out to the theater with just friends (i know... what a boaring life!!!). And i loved the movie. Saif and Priety stood out more than shah Rukh. Did u know Kareena was supposed to do the role of 'Naina'? How would the movie have turned out? Different definitely. But Priety did a great job and i dont want any one else in that role. Well maybe Kajol (i always am partial to her).
Karan Johar's first venture into production was made by his assistant director, Nikhil Advani.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy entered the Johar camp with this movie. And what music they made!!! They are among my favourites. Keep it up guys. Give them credit for giving India its most popular disco songs (Its the time to disco..., followed by Where's the poarty tonight... from KANK).

Roja - tamil movie

Im starting out with one of my altime favourite movies - Roja. Actually here im more partial towards the music. A.R. Rehman's first was definitely his best!!! Innitially people did wonder why Mani Rathnam is moving away from his regular - Illairaja (the true melody king, but Rehman really prooved his worth. Even today the soundtrack sounds fresh/new. I watched this movie just because it had the name 'Mani Rathnam' attched to it. The man is just great. His movies contained so much simplicity yet were so extraordinary in their content and execution. You'll notice in his pictures that even in the dream sequences the heroine does not change character. In the sense that suddenly there is no shift from saris to micro minis - which is generally considered crowd pullers. The sceneries were just to die for - and all that is India you guys. I loved the cinematography, chroreography, music, every thing...
The movie begins with top government cryptologist, Rishi coming to a village to see his to be bride. In a twist of tale he refuses the match and says that he'll marry the younger sister, Roja (Madhu) instead. Roja hates him from that instant. Even though she marries Rishi, Roja feels she has betrayed her sister. Its only when her sister tells her that it was she who had requested Rishi to back away from the match in order to marry her true love does Roja begin to respect and love her husband.
Just when every thing is going great, Rishi is assigned a posting at an army communications center in Kashmir. Here, he is abducted by militants (lead by Pankaj Kapoor - looking real convincing). His love for his motherland and Roja, keep Rishi's spirit alive. The rest of the movie revolves around Roja's efforts to get back her husband. In a land where she's unfamiliar with the language and political situation, Roja fights to bring her husdband back - alive. She is helped by Janakaraj and Naseer. This was probably the first movie where militants were presented in a more humane way... this is evident towards the end. They are not just out killing people all the time, which was a refreshing change. This is said just with basis to the movie, not as a political view.
And guys please dont watch the dubbed versions - it takes the whole joy out of watching this masterpiece.

# This movie won the National award for best picture in 1993

Lyrics

I love writing down lyrics of movie songs. I've been collecting 'songs' for a long time now - hindi, english, tamil, and a couple from telugu and kanada. I just love the way these lyricists are able to portray emotions, any kind. they weave majic into the tunes. Lyrics are just as important as the music. I only know the lyricists from Bollywood. So enlighten me guys...
I think Indian music is the greatest of all - with all the diversity, colours, and emotions..... well i could just go on
I promise a great collection. But if there are any mistakes please let me know - its a crime to spoil such a piece of art.

Hello

Hey to all!!! Wow this feels great. This is the first time I'm actually even entering a blog.... and it happens to be mine. Technology zindabad! Hahaha. Well you always have so much to tell (esp. when you are a chatterbox like mua), but its amazing how things kinda wipe out of memory when you do have the opportunity.
Well whats my blog about again??? MOVIES!!! Aahh.. I love movies. And Im sure im right up there with 99% of people who do have access to such pleasures. Who doesn't like to watch a movie??? Its the best time pass ever. Hollywood, Bollywood, Kollywood..... whatever.. movies are great. Just wish some of them would actually give us some good ones. Well but we do have the good ones.....

All about this in my next edition guys. Wait and see....
